The Future of Voiceover: 5 Trends to Watch in 2024 And Beyond

The voiceover industry is evolving rapidly, influenced by new technologies and shifting consumer expectations. Here’s what to expect in 2024 and beyond.

1. AI and Synthetic Voices:
AI-generated voices are becoming more prevalent, but they lack the nuance and emotion of human voiceovers. While AI can be useful for certain applications, the demand for authentic, human voices remains strong. I wrote another blog article discussing Ai voices in a little more detail, which you can read here

2. Increased Demand for Diverse Voices

Brands are seeking out diverse and authentic voices to better represent a global audience. There’s growing demand for voiceover artists from various cultural backgrounds, languages, and dialects to ensure inclusivity and relatability. Voices from local areas are a major contributor to this as a local accent used in anything from a TV Commercial to Explainer Videos voiced by someone from that area, always adds an extra layer of brand authenticity.

3. Hyper-Personalization of Voiceovers

Personalized audio experiences are becoming more popular, with brands using voiceovers that can adapt to individual listener preferences. This trend is particularly prominent in interactive content and dynamic ads, where the voiceover can change based on user behavior.

4. Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing

As businesses focus more on sustainability, there’s an increasing interest in ethical voiceover practices. Clients are prioritizing voiceover artists who use eco-friendly studios and practices, and there’s a push for fair wages and working conditions in the industry.

5. Expansion of Voiceover in New Media

The demand for voiceovers is growing in emerging media like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and immersive gaming. As these platforms evolve, there’s a need for voiceover artists who can create engaging, immersive experiences tailored to these new formats. I had the pleasure of being in a gaming Performance Capture session where our voices and motions are tracked and digitised. Whilst layers of voiceover can be added in post production, the live element of acting in the moment adds an extra layer of realism to the performance.
